Random Thoughts ... I Hear The Thunder
|
When We Drum We Are One Put somewhere in the neighbourhood of 400 Young K to Grade 8 students in an arena, all with Djembe Drums. Add an assortment of other African Drums along with their instructor, friend and mentor Ron Cross and you could hear the thunder. As I sat in the arena listening I could not help but think what a wonderful opportunity for all the children to participate in a non competitive way. Children from 12 different schools participated with other children they did not know before this event. It was amazing to watch the children as this "pied piper" of the drums led them first as individual classes then enmass through their drum sequences. The thunder threatened to bring down the roof as they all drummed in unision. Teachers and parents both see long-term benefits to their children: reducing stress, increasing self confidence and breaking down barriers between cultures and ages. Ron's involvement has led to permanently funded youth drumming programs in schools. |

It is good when a plan comes together and it works as you thought.
There is nothing like the feeling inside when you are listening to that many drums live. It goes straight to the sole. Love it.
That number of drums makes me think of the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. I really like the idea of using rhythm to bring kids together.
So fabulous when kids are taught the appreciation for beat and music at a young age ...
Kathy,
That sounds like quite the experience. It must have been difficult to organize. But, once it's done there is quite a sense of accomplishment. That was obviously a great community event.
Brian
What a great experience for all the children involved. Music is a wonderful way to become one.
one...they will remember this for the rest of their lives......
two...I wonder what they were thinking when they were beating on those drums....
three....drums are fun to beat on cause they dont beat back.....
four.....you actually feel like you are playing a musical instrument and with all the noise, you probalby think you are playing perfectly well.
I so enjoyed this post Sweet Kathy....
Mark - like a good business plan it only works well when all the players do their part at the right time
Randy - when the building starts to reverberate "To resound in a succession of echoes; reecho. To have a prolonged or continuing effect" wikipedia one has to feel it in the soul.
John - kids from all walks of life, a broad range of nationalities, personalities and varying degrees of talent. they played their hearts out
Dagny - one child one beat 400 children still one beat ..... together they are one
Brian - it was amazing; to watch how well behaved they were, to see how well coordinated they were and to hear how great they sounded
Ellie - Working with refugees I have found that music is a wonderful way to bring people together ..... when ever we have a group out to our home in the country there is always some one who starts playing the drums or other musical instruments we have around just for that purpose ..... it really does bring peoples of different cultures and backgrounds together as one .....
Richie - I am not sure about your point 3 and 4 But the rest is spot on
Hi Kathy..I see we're back up again, Brad thinks everyone in his office shut down so they could see their Mummies..Hope you had a Great Mothers Day
Drumming is such a great way to connect with so many using the sound of music...and it's very fun! Laura has done drum circles in the past and explains it as everyone uniting when drumming and being overcome with a sense of pure energy and power..in a very postive way...also in Feng Shui you can incorporate Drumming for Space clearings
Fred - indeed I did ..... Thank You
Carole - I've participated in drum circles before, and enjoyed the experience, but this was the first one of this size that I have watched ..... it was truly amazing how synchronized they were, even all the little ones.
Kathy....my #3 alludes to kids getting out frustrations in a constructive way instead of on each other....kids picking on kids and kids picking on them back..etc. Drums take a licking and keep on ticking...if you will.
My #4 reminded me when I played the drums in high school band. I was one of several who did. I couldn't read music, but I could follow the flow most of the time. But when I made a mistake, it when unnoticed for the most part....you see the music teacher had this trained ear and every-time there was a thump too many from the drum section, he would smile at me. Got a B in the class....not bad.
Best.....
Richie - indeed drums do "take a licking and keep on ticking" and as for the music teacher he had a good ear
